FALL 2025 First Responder Academy
Real training. Real mentors. Real impact.
The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is thrilled to announce the launch of the First Responder Academy at Monsignor McCoy High School, an innovative program designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of emergency service professionals. The program is set to debut in Fall 2025.
Developed in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, the First Responder Academy offers students hands-on training and real-world experience in emergency services and beyond. This initiative aims to bridge education and industry, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to excel in these essential fields. MHCBE is also exploring relevant dual credit opportunities with Medicine Hat College to complement the program.
“Our First Responder Academy is more than a program—it’s an opportunity for students to explore their passion for serving and protecting their community while building a strong foundation for their future careers,” said Deputy Superintendent, Nick Gale “We are proud to partner with our local emergency services and collaborate with Medicine Hat College to provide this unique and hands-on learning experience to future students at Monsignor McCoy High School.”
Key Features of the Program Include:
- Skills and Development: Students will develop practical and transferable career and life skills related to emergency services, as well as placing a focus on health and wellness. Advanced courses will include topics such as Criminal Justice, Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Awareness, Incident Command, and more.
- Mentorship: The program will be supported by significant contributions from professionals at the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, allowing students to work with and learn from experienced professionals.
- Experiential Learning: The program equips students with transferable skills such as working with mechanical systems, water flow and suppression while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills—valuable across many industries beyond emergency services.
- Affordability: Program fees are yet to be determined but will align with fees for similar option courses offered at Monsignor McCoy High School.
By participating in the First Responder Academy, students will gain valuable insights into emergency service careers, allowing them to make informed decisions about their futures while contributing meaningfully to their community.
