Monsignor McCoy High School First Responder Academy

Launching Fall 2025

The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is proud to announce the launch of the First Responder Academy at Monsignor McCoy High School, set to begin in Fall 2025.

This innovative program, developed in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services aims to provide students with hands-on training and real-world experience. By bridging classroom learning with industry expertise, the program prepares students for dynamic careers in emergency services and related fields. In addition to collaboration with emergency services, we are also exploring relevant dual credit opportunities with Medicine Hat College to complement the program.

Through direct mentorship from community professionals, students will acquire practical skills and explore career pathways in policing and firefighting. This unique partnership connects education and frontline service, creating opportunities for students to build a strong foundation for their future.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 

What grades will the program be offered to?

The program will be offered to grade 11 students during the first semester of the 2025-2026 school year. 

The program will be available to Grade 10 students beginning in the second semester and will be continued in grades 11 and 12.

Do students need prerequisites to enroll?

Students wishing to enter the program must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of Physical Education 10 during the first semester.
  • Maintained good academic standing.
  • A record free from attendance or behavioural issues.
  • A commitment to the demands of the program.

What will students learn?

Students will explore various career opportunities in policing, firefighting, and emergency services. They will gain foundational knowledge and practical experience tailored to first responder roles, developing transferable career and life skills.

Who will oversee and instruct the program?

The program will be coordinated by a staff member from Monsignor McCoy High School. Additionally, professionals from the Medicine Hat Police Service, Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, and other community partners will provide instruction and mentorship throughout the program.

How does this program benefit students entering the workforce?

In Grade 10, students will have the opportunity to assess their interest in first responder careers. In Grades 11 and 12, they will access specialized courses such as:

  • Criminal Justice
  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Awareness
  • Incident Command 

What is the cost?

Program fees are yet to be determined but will align with fees for similar option courses offered at Monsignor McCoy High School.

Where will the classes and training take place?

Primary instruction will occur at Monsignor McCoy High School. However, students will also benefit from experiential learning opportunities at facilities such as the Medicine Hat Police Station, Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, and Medicine Hat College.
